The First Lesson

This is where we meet and see if we are a good fit. Come prepared with goggles that DO NOT cover the nose, a swimsuit, and lots of sunscreen. The instructor will bring all other necessary equipment. At the end of the lesson, the payment for 8 lessons is made.

Going At Your Pace

Mae is a little different from both ISR instructors and traditional instructors in that she intuitively goes at her students' pace. For some, this means they will be swimming after one lesson, and for others — especially where water anxiety is involved — it means over ten lessons of slowly recalibrating the student's relationship with the water. Mae's method relies on building and maintaining rapport with her students and pushing them to develop uncomfortable yet doable skills.

Staying Safe

The foundation of Mae's method is staying safe in the water. Before learning any stroke technique, students must demonstrate an ability to swim 23+ yards, incorporating floating on the back. So for those who don't know how to swim, this is the skill we master first, alongside the following skills:

- Floating on your back for a minute

- Treading water

- Diving underwater

- Swimming to the wall

- Exiting the pool without stairs

- Jumping in the pool

Mae Out of the Water

"When I'm not working or teaching swim lessons, I thoroughly enjoy playing with my daughter and dog, baking sourdough bread, doing CrossFit, and reading fiction/fantasy. I'm also starting to grow a vegetable garden and, while a lot of them have died, I've got enough living plants to say I'm succeeding!"
